We are often asked where to start when dressing the walls of a dining room or bar. The answer comes down first to the type of venue, the style you are after and the atmosphere you want to convey from the moment customers walk in.

Scenolia is a French brand specialising in large-format printing. We make every wallpaper in the Monts du Lyonnais, to order, which means the product is always available and the quality is controlled from start to finish.

Which wallpaper should you choose for a bar, restaurant or café?

Every concept calls for a different design, texture and colour palette. Here is our advice for each type of venue, to help you choose well and find inspiration in our collection of designs.

Bar wallpaper: cocktail bars, lounges, wine bars and nightclubs

Wallpaper for a cocktail bar or lounge bar relies on deep tones that work well in the evening. A burgundy pattern, a forest-green design or an Art Nouveau panel behind the counter creates a feature wall that catches the eye and sets a convivial mood.

For a wine bar, a panoramic print of a vaulted cellar, barrels or bottle racks creates a sense of terroir. Stone and dark wood add character and put customers at ease from the moment they arrive, in a warm, traditional spirit.

In a nightclub or late-night bar, neon, a black-and-gold Art Deco pattern or a dark geometric texture works perfectly under subdued lighting. The atmosphere becomes memorable and asserts the identity of the venue, with a real touch of luxury.

Vintage patterns, graphic stripes or a weathered wall texture suit pubs and industrial-style interiors. A well-chosen wall covering tells a story before the first drink is poured.

Restaurant wallpaper: brasseries, pizzerias and crêperies

Wallpaper for a restaurant needs to stay legible from the back of the room. A black chalkboard design, an Art Deco floral pattern or a black-and-white Parisian brasserie frontage sets the tone and gives shape to the interior.

A stylised floral design or a trompe-l'œil window makes a small dining room feel larger. These touches extend the dining experience and make people want to come back.

For a pizzeria, a vintage design, a Mediterranean botanical mural or a raw-wall texture adds to the warm feel.

In a crêperie, a seaside scene, a graphic Breton pattern or a light-wood look evokes the spirit of the region. Wallpaper in a restaurant serves the décor just as much as the menu.

Wallpaper for cafés, coffee shops, tea rooms, pâtisseries and bakeries

In a café or coffee shop, a close-up of coffee beans, elegant typography or fine branches create a soft, welcoming atmosphere. A steaming cup or a watercolour design warms the space without overloading it.

For a tea room, beige tones, delicate flowers or a botanical composition bring a calming, nature-inspired touch. In a pâtisserie or bakery, ears of wheat, chalk-drawn utensils or an old-newspaper-style illustration showcase your artisan skills.

Jungle and tropical themes, very much on trend, suit a coffee shop just as well as a bright, airy room. Dense foliage and exotic flowers add depth to a large wall.

Colour, light and contrast in a room lit for the evening

One piece of feedback we hear regularly: the result looks darker in real life than on screen. That's only natural, as your room is far less brightly lit than a computer screen, especially during evening service.

A very dark design in a dimly lit room closes the space in. Keep it to a single wall, or balance it with warm, directed lighting that shows off the pattern without overpowering it.

On the technical side, our satin-finish textile canvas adds depth to the colours and to the texture of the design. Facing a window or spotlights, angle the lighting from the side rather than straight at the wall: this avoids direct glare and keeps the image legible from every table.

Where to put wallpaper in your room

Some walls show off a design better than others. The back bar, the banquette wall and the entrance lobby remain the most visually effective spots, as they are what customers look at first.

Many customers hesitate to cover a wall that is already busy. Avoid surfaces crowded with shelving, a beer tap or a range cooker, as the pattern quickly becomes unreadable and the effect falls flat.

The toilet corridor is an often-overlooked area. Yet it's exactly where wallpaper makes a lasting impression: on a narrow, highly visible wall, an original design creates a pleasant surprise.

Non-woven or textile canvas, strips or single piece: which material and finish for which area?

The choice of material matters as much as the image. It depends above all on footfall and humidity in the area to be covered. As large-format specialists, we offer several materials and finishes to suit every wall configuration.

Close-up of 150 g non-woven material

150 g non-woven

Low-traffic walls, dining areas. Easy to hang, with paste applied directly to the wall. Thinner and very easy to hang, making it ideal for a first project.

Close-up of 230 g washable textile canvas

230 g textile canvas

High-traffic and damp areas. Washable, durable and tear-proof during fitting. This hard-wearing fabric can be cleaned with soapy water, a real advantage next to banquettes.

Single-piece wallpaper hung seamlessly across a large wall

Single piece

Large walls, no joins. A seamless finish, with no visible join across the full width of the wall.

Our wall coverings are PVC-free and rated A+ for VOC emissions.

Standard or made-to-measure: fitting the wallpaper to your wall

A bar wall rarely matches standard sizes. There are two options, depending on the layout of your room and the dimensions to be covered.

The standard panoramic format suits most straight walls. Our made-to-measure wallpaper caters for unusual layouts, to the nearest centimetre, thanks to an online configurator.

This tool recalculates the image to keep it well balanced. You adjust the width, height and framing without simply stretching the image, which preserves the print quality and the pattern.

For a wall with a corner, alcove or obstacle, you can put your question to our team before confirming your order. Fitting instructions come with every design, along with a detailed guide.

How much does wallpaper for a bar or restaurant cost?

The price depends on the material and format you choose. A standard panoramic print starts at €189 for the complete design, which remains affordable for a first fit-out, whatever your budget.

For made-to-measure wallpaper, made-to-measure prices are shown per square metre, starting from €45/m².

It's worth comparing the costs over time. Over a five-year period, a washable, durable wallpaper wears better than light-coloured paint in a high-traffic room.

The standard format is enough for a wall of 3 or 4 metres, while made-to-measure makes sense as soon as your dimensions fall outside the standard sizes. Again, if you have specific requirements, such as a very large height or width, get in touch: we can very often adapt our designs to make your project possible. Delivery is free to mainland France (excluding Corsica).

Frequently asked questions

What fire rating is required for wallpaper in a bar or restaurant?

A restaurant, bar or pub is a public-access building: reaction-to-fire requirements for wall linings are regulated there, and the fire safety commission may ask for a certificate.

In practice, the aim is a B-s1,d0 rating, which replaced the former M1. At Scenolia, both the non-woven and the textile canvas carry this rating, so you choose the material according to how the area is used, not for fire safety reasons.

The official certificate, whether a test report or an attestation, can be requested from customer service according to the exact reference of your order, for your safety register.

How do you clean wallpaper in a restaurant dining room?

The textile canvas can be washed with soapy water or a mild detergent. It is a hard-wearing, tear-proof fabric once fitted, recommended next to banquettes and in high-traffic areas.

It is also the material to choose for damp rooms. Our wall coverings are PVC-free and rated A+ for VOC emissions.

For low-traffic walls in a dining room, the 150 g non-woven is sufficient and is easy to look after day to day.

Can wallpaper be hung on a painted wall?

Yes, as long as the wall is sound, dry and smooth. The paste is applied directly to the wall, which makes hanging easy even without experience.

However, avoid surfaces crowded with shelving, a beer tap or a range cooker: the pattern quickly becomes unreadable and the effect falls flat.

Fitting instructions come with every design, along with a detailed guide. For a wall with a corner, alcove or obstacle, put your question to our team before confirming.

How long does it take to hang a design on a bar wall?

Allow a few hours, depending on the surface to be covered. The room can be used straight away, with no drying time and no smell, so there is no loss of trading.

That is the main advantage of wallpaper over paint: you put up the design and reopen, without closing your venue for several days.

As each design is printed to order in our workshops, allow 3 to 5 working days between ordering and receiving an online order. For quotes, allow around 2 weeks, to cover the graphic processing and exchanges with our team: factor this in before your works begin.

How can I avoid an unpleasant surprise with the final result?

The configurator recalculates the image to your dimensions: you adjust the width, height and framing without simply stretching the image, which preserves the print quality and the pattern.

Bear in mind that a room is far less brightly lit than a computer screen: a very dark design looks darker in real life, especially during evening service. Keep it to a single wall or balance it with warm, directed lighting.

Customer photos and reviews gathered by an independent body give a good idea of the real result before you buy.

Can wallpaper be removed without damaging the wall?

Non-woven wallpaper strips off dry by simply pulling it away, with no need for soaking or scraping.

This is a real benefit at the end of a lease or when changing your concept: you hand the wall back in good condition, with no refurbishment work.
